Islamic Relief Worldwide is looking to recruit a General Counsel based at our International Office in Birmingham. The General Counsel is the foremost global lead for all legal matters, and will provide leadership to the organisation at a time of growth, as well as an increasingly complex regulatory and humanitarian environment. We are seeking an experienced and capable candidate who is looking for a fulfilling and influential role for one of the world’s largest independent and faith-based international NGOs, impacting the lives of millions globally.

The role will involve heading up the organisations legal department and provide, with minimal supervision, legal advice to the organisation, both directly and through external lawyers, to ensure that the organisation assesses and addresses the legal implications of its operations with the purpose of helping the organisation to be as effective as possible in achieving its objectives, vision and mission. S/he will maintain global oversight of legal issues that affect the Islamic Relief family of organisations and be a first port of call on all legal issues.

More specifically, the General Counsel will have wide ranging responsibilities including advising on the legal implications of organisation governance, establishing/registering operations in various jurisdictions around the world, contractual issues, intellectual property matters, reputation management, policy advice, compliance with AML/CTF laws, oversight on commercial property matters, and manage the organisation’s relationship with key regulators. The job holder will advise on commercial projects including partnerships, joint ventures and other collaborative agreements.

The successful candidate must be a Solicitor qualified in England and Wales with considerable PQE. The post holder will have a good understanding of charity sector legal requirements and have wide range of experience in various disciplines of law. Experience of an in house role is preferable as well as ability to speak a second key international language and a commitment to the organisations objectives, vision and mission. The candidate must have the flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, also be prepared to travel.
