IRW is currently recruiting for the position of ‘Conflict and Social Cohesion Advisor' to join its dynamic Programme Quality Division. In the context of the IRW Global strategy, this role strengthens Islamic Relief’s commitment towards working in fragile and conflict states by supporting context-sensitive programming, social cohesion programming and triple nexus approaches, aligned with Do No Harm principle.

The Conflict and Social Cohesion Advisor will provide technical support to the social cohesion components of triple nexus programmes in West Africa. The role will, in line with best practise, support the design of quality approaches to conflict prevention and social cohesion, within integrated, community-based, livelihoods programmes. The role also supports the design of other social cohesion projects within the organisation, leads the development of faith-sensitive peace programming and generates evidence and learning to share best practice both internally and externally.

The Conflict Advisor will also take the lead in strengthening context-sensitive programming in Islamic Relief as part of its commitment to Do No Harm. As the global lead on conflict and peace programming, the role leads on advocacy on these issues and represents Islamic Relief in UK and international conflict/peace networks and events.

Please note, the role entails overseas travel, particularly to Niger and Mali.

The successful candidate must have or be:

  • Excellent knowledge of conflict prevention/peacebuilding/social cohesion programming in the context of INGOs and experience of providing technical support to implementing teams.
  • Experience conducting and writing up gender-sensitive conflict analysis
  • Knowledge of conflict/context-sensitivity and experience of embedding context-sensitivity into the work of humanitarian or development departments and colleagues in multi-cultural environments.
  • Experience working with international NGOs or operational UN agencies in highly complex and insecure contexts.
  • Experience of representing, influencing and sharing best practise with external agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Track record of effectively collaborating, mobilising and working across a multi-cultural, multi-language organisation with limited resources.
  • Experience in developing and delivering effective capability training, be it technology-based or face to face, including with colleagues for whom English is a second language.
  • Experience of writing and communicating learning effectively, internally and externally.
  • Track record in successfully contributing to successful funding bids.
  • Good knowledge of Sustaining Peace agenda, SDGs and Agenda for Humanity
